Congo DR building confidence ahead of Jamaica clash
As part of their preparation for the FIFA Play-Off Tournament final, Congo DR marched to a 2-0 friendly win over Bermuda.
As part of their preparation for the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Play-Off Tournament, which will be against Jamaica on 31 March, Congo DR boosted their confidence with a commanding 2-0 victory over Bermuda in a friendly match on Wednesday.
In order to make his final adjustments away from prying eyes, Leopards head coach Sebastien Desabre opted for a closed-door session at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara. The goal was to get back into the rhythm of competition, test players and acclimate to the altitude of the area (over 1,500 metres above sea level). The Congo DR staff took this friendly match very seriously, eager to stack the odds in their favour to achieve the North American dream.
Facing a tenacious Bermuda side, the Congolese Leopards made the difference at the very end of the first half, thanks to the excellent Fiston Mayele. Often confined to a super-sub role, one that he fulfills perfectly, the Pyramids star striker could be in line for a starting spot against the Reggae Boyz.
Also back in form after several months on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury was Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa, who doubled the lead with a penalty kick shortly after half-time, sealing the match’s outcome.
On Thursday, the Congo DR team’s attention was focused on the playoff semi-final between New Caledonia and Jamaica. Many players, as well as the coaching staff, were present at the Guadalajara Stadium, where the Reggae Boyz edged out a valiant Cagous side by the narrowest of margins, 1-0.
Desabre and his men no doubt closely observed the Jamaicans, who struggled to pad their early lead against the Oceania upstarts. However, with difference makers like Leon Bailey and Bobby Reid only featuring in the second half, the Caribbean side stand to be rested and ready against the Leopards.
To secure a historic World Cup berth, their first since 1974, and be placed in Group K alongside Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan, Congo DR will have to give it their all on Tuesday and show their usual team spirit. The joy of an entire nation depends on it.
